![]() Sidebar OaklandĪs announced on Instagram last week, beloved Oakland classic Sidebar closes for good on Sat., Jan. in Oakland, and is temporarily closed until further notice. Nosh will update readers on reopening details. For now, the former Make Westing team has indeed exited west. We have reached out to find out more about what this might mean for the space and concept. 1, though it’s taking the internet a moment to catch up to the news. The 12-year-old cocktail bar went dark Jan. In a Christmas day announcement that slipped past many, Make Westing has temporarily closed to prepare for a change of ownership. in Oakland, and is slated to close permanently March 24. There are also In-N-Out locations in Alameda (555 Willie Stargell Ave.) and San Leandro (15575 Hesperian Blvd.). Oaklandside took a deep dive into the crime data for the area near Oakland International Airport and how it compares to crime rates around other urban airports. The news of the closing has triggered many to reflect on the larger, pervasive issues facing Oakland’s businesses and residents. Despite its more than 400 locations, Southern California-based In-N-Out is a private company, not a franchise, and generates more revenue per location than the top national chains, transcending otherwise potentially divisive conservative values. The dramatic announcement follows an SF Chronicle expose on the robberies, violence and vandalism near the Oakland International Airport in the area where the fast food restaurant is located that have impacted customers and workers alike. We'll be talking and joking about this one for years - And for all of the wrong reasons. The closure is not scheduled until March, but Nosh could not ignore the widely reported news that In-N-Out is planning to shutter its Oakland location due to the high crime rates in the neighborhood. We've NEVER been to a place SO strangely hostile. She clearly was also angry with him, and after running his card, she THREW the receipt at him. ![]() When my husband went up to pay, another waitress was at the register. ![]() At some point, the waitress dropped off the check and said that she was leaving (what?!). Needless to say, we weren't checked in on at any point to see how our meal was. It would have taken 15 seconds to tell us this this is absurd. When I suggested that she tell that to future customers (we would have ordered from the breakfast menu if we had known this), she snapped at me that she didn't have time to tell every table that information. When the waitress finally arrived with our food, she coldly said that it took time to switch the kitchen from breakfast to lunch service, as if this was all somehow our fault. When we began to complain, the waitress shouted at us that everyone else was also waiting (okay?) and the restaurant was VERY busy (there were 6 tables filled, with 3 waitresses working). We waited for 45 minutes (any parent of little kids knows this is hard when unexpected). The waitress forgot another beverage until reminded. One of our party did not have his coffee refilled. We thought that was weird, but carried on. We were told everyone at the table needed to order from the same menu. We arrived at noon and were asked if we wanted the breakfast or lunch menu. What a horrible 18th birthday party! More It was like our meals were cooked 30 minutes earlier, forgotten, then remembered and served. My husband's turkey dinner was dry and COLD. The French fries were, again, tasty but cold. My steak was tasty, but room temperature. When our six meals arrived (way later than they should have), EVERY SINGLE ONE of them was cold. ![]() We did send them back, and they gave my husband a great soup (the only other positive in our night). It was like they went to Walmart and bought 3-day-old bags of prepackaged salad. When our salads arrived, there was not a single piece of lettuce without brown edges. I ordered a chardonnay that a very stale taste - not sure if it was just old or a bad brand. When we arrived, there was only one other group, which left shortly afterwards. To set the stage: we were a party of six, celebrating our granddaughter's 18th birthday.
